How many ITRA points are needed to register for the UTMB®?
If you've looked into the UTMB® registration formalities, you should already know that you need to show a certain amount of competitiveness through ITRA points. Here is what you need to know about these famous points.
What are ITRA points?
ITRA is the International Trail Running Association: the international organisation that manages trails worldwide. Races organised within the framework of the ITRA can earn qualifying points. These qualification points are then used to gain access to other events. Each race can be worth between 1 and 6 qualification points. 6 points correspond to a long distance race and/or a race with a high gradient. For example, the Festival des Templiers race (78 km/3500 D+) earns 4 points.
How many points do I need to do the UTMB®?
From 2021 onwards, access to the UTMB® and its registration process will change and become more flexible and open. In addition to the draw which will continue to exist and offer the possibility of access to the UTMB® Mont-Blanc to as many people as possible. Since January 2020, a parallel system offering faster access to its races. This second system will be based on the concept of Running Stones, which can be collected at a limited number of events chosen by UTMB®. The Running Stones will only be issued to the finishers of the selected races. They will be recorded in a database that will allow each runner to see his or her stock of Running Stones in real time. Once the runner has acquired the required number of Running Stones, he or she will be guaranteed entry to the UTMB® Mont-Blanc race of his or her choice, without going through the draw. And if he is short of a few, he can convert them into tickets to take part in the draw for the race of his choice at any time, thus improving his chances of success.
In addition, depending on the event, a number of points is required:
- UTMB®: 10 points
- TDS®: 8 points
- CCC® : 6 points
- OCC® : 4 points
YCC® : reserved for young people (no points required) PTL® : selection on file (no points required) MCC® : local, volunteers and partners (no points required).
