History of the UTMB®
The UTMB® is still a young event but it is the queen of the ultra trail and its history already makes this race a legend. Whether it is the records, the prize list or the accidents, the UTMB® has a unique history in its 20 years of existence.
The UTMB® records
Although the event now attracts 10,000 runners, its record is mainly due to the enthusiasm of the applicants, who reach new peaks every year. But the runners' records are in the number of victories accumulated by both men and women, and of course the speed record of the event, with certain editions that will remain historic in the eyes of enthusiasts.
The prize list
There are only great names in the UTMB® prize list! From the first winner Dawa Sherpa to the recent domination of the Frenchmen Xavier Thévenard and François D'Haene, not forgetting of course the star of the ultra trail Kilian Jornet. In 2022, he will break Pau Capell's record by going under the symbolic 20-hour mark. He also equals François D'Haene's record of four victories. In the women's race, the record is dominated by the five victories of the British Lizzy Hawker.
Accidents
In the legend of an event, its danger plays an important role. Even if the UTMB® presents real risks for competitors, it is not very accident-prone. It is above all its popularity and emulation that lead many people to try their hand at the peaks. When these improvisations are carried out without equipment and without specific preparation, it is often there that the most serious accidents can occur.
