Hiking clothes for a long trek

Going on a long trek requires organisation and preparation. The aim is to carry a minimum of clothing for maximum efficiency, so we prefer technical and multi-purpose clothing. They can be adapted to all situations, both in the sun and in bad weather such as rain or wind. Find out which hiking clothes to take on a long trek.

The three-layer system for the upper body

As with a day hike, the three-layer system is your best ally when trekking. It can be adapted to the weather and the choice of materials will be different from that of a short hike.

The base layer will wick away perspiration and regulate body heat. For a multi-day hike, merino wool clothing is preferred. It has the advantage of excellent moisture management and prevents the formation of bad odours. You can therefore wear it for several days without any problem.

The choice of the second insulating layer will depend on the environment and climate around you. We advise you to choose a lighter or lighter fleece depending on the temperature. It provides warmth almost immediately. You can also choose a down jacket, which is ideal if the temperatures are very low, but not recommended during intense effort.

Finally, your choice of jacket should be a hardshell. It provides excellent protection against the elements thanks to its waterproof and windproof membrane. A softshell jacket has many advantages but is not recommended for long treks where showers can occur. Indeed, it will be difficult to predict the weather over several days, especially if you are going to the mountains. It is better to ensure optimal protection with a rain jacket.

Hiking trousers for a long trek

Having several pairs of hiking trousers is a good idea for a multi-day hike. We advise you to take at least two pairs of trousers. For example, you can choose a good pair of durable, warm trousers and take a second pair of lighter trousers, which can be converted into shorts, for example. This allows you to cope with all conditions. Your choice depends of course on the time of year, the climate and the place where you are going hiking.

The trousers must meet at least three criteria: strength, water repellency and breathability. If your trek is more technical, it is a good idea to have trousers with reinforcements in certain areas. A water-repellent treatment to resist a minimum of humidity is also essential (if you think you'll be confronted with bad weather you can always bring an extra pair of rain trousers). Finally, the ventilation zips allow you to significantly improve the breathability of your trousers.

Clothing for a long trek

When it comes to materials, we recommend synthetic fibres for a long trek. They have the advantage of drying faster, being more waterproof and offering better protection in cold weather. When hiking for several days, even in summer, it is often cool and damp in the morning or evening and adequate trousers are needed. Keep in mind that your trekking clothing should be adaptable to a maximum of situations.

Foot protection and essential accessories

Socks dedicated to walking are highly recommended in order to be well protected. They prevent poor moisture management and the formation of blisters. Cotton socks should be avoided. As for your walking shoes, it is better to choose high shoes or shoes with mid uppers rather than low uppers. They are better suited to situations where ankle support is very important (long treks, technical terrain, heavy bags, etc.).

Finally, don't forget to take several accessories with you. In summer or when it is hot, you can take a hat or cap. In winter or when it is cold, a hat and a neck warmer are essential. Always take sunglasses with you for protection and favour models with side lenses at high altitudes.

Clothing for a long trek should be durable, versatile and suitable for all situations. In addition to your own clothes and a change of clothes, you can take along an outfit dedicated to the bivouac. Make sure your clothes are light enough so that you don't overload yourself during your trek.
