Nordic walking is an outdoor physical activity that requires little equipment. However, the choice of your outfit should be thoughtful and appropriate for the time of year you practice this sport. In this article, we explain how to dress for Nordic walking.

Dressing for warm weather

The choice of clothing for Nordic walking depends on a number of factors, including the climate. In hot weather, your clothing should be light, flexible and breathable. You can opt for fairly short clothing that will allow you to breathe well.

For the upper body, a t-shirt made of synthetic fibres such as polyester is a good idea. It is very breathable and allows you to evacuate perspiration easily. For the trousers, you can choose between light shorts, trail shorts or light breathable trousers. Your clothes should be tight enough to avoid chafing when you walk. A light windbreaker can also be included in your bag. In terms of colours, it is better to choose light coloured clothes that will reflect the waves instead of absorbing them.

Finally, light and breathable shoes with a flexible sole are preferable for Nordic walking in summer or in hot weather.

Dressing for cold weather

In winter or in cold weather, it is important to bring a little more clothing to avoid suffering from the cold. It is best to dress in the three-layer system and adopt the onion technique. Start with several layers of clothing and remove them as your body warms up.

For the first layer, a technical undergarment made of synthetic fibres is perfectly suitable. For the second layer, you can choose a fleece jacket made of hollow fibres which provides good thermal insulation. Finally, choose a windproof jacket as a third layer. It will protect you from the weather.

For the trousers, you have several choices depending on your preferences. Running tights or Nordic walking trousers are perfect. Trousers provide comfort, ease of movement and protection from both wet and cold.

Finally, look for flexible shoes with waterproof uppers and soles with an anti-slip layer.

Essential accessories for Nordic walking

To complete your outfit, it is important to protect your extremities, especially in cold weather. Warm and breathable thermal gloves, a versatile neck warmer (for wind, sun or cold), or a thermal headband are perfect for Nordic walking. In hot weather, it is essential to protect yourself from UV rays, in particular by wearing glasses and a breathable cap. For socks, choose socks designed for walking that will help you avoid blisters.

Finally, the choice of your poles is also very important. Beginners are usually satisfied with aluminium poles with steel tips, while regular walkers tend to opt for carbon poles with tungsten tips.

Dressing for Nordic walking is relatively simple. It is important to choose your outfit carefully to ensure that you are comfortable while walking.
