WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW BEFORE BUYING A PUFFER JACKET?

Being chilly on a mountain hike is something to avoid, so take an insulated puffer jacket or gilet as your secret weapon in cold conditions.

Synthetic insulation is now everpresent in jackets built for colder climates. They're compact, lightweight and maintain heat even when the jacket gets wet. Cimaloft® is perhaps the best-known for these synthetic insulation products, featuring a DWR water-repellent finish to ensure you stay warm when the going gets soggy.

Puffer jackets made with Cimaloft® are lightweight and breathable, warm and cosy-soft: they’re simply great to wear when you’re out hiking. The best feature of these ultra-lightweight jackets offer the look and feel of natural down. As they are highly breathable you can wear one under your rain jacket, as a mid-layer, or on its own. Modern puffer jackets offer an excellent warm-to-weight ratio, so you can stay warm without over-bulking. As well as offering excellent wind protection they’re also highly compressible, so you can stash them away in the smallest of gaps in your pack.
