The UTMB® time barriers

One of the specificities of the UTMB® course, like many other trails, is that it has time limits. Below you will find the essential information about these time limits.

Why have time limits?

Even if the conditions of access to certain trails such as the UTMB® are based on past performances, it happens that competitors cannot keep up with the pace and are very late. The time barriers were put in place either to eliminate them or to direct them towards easier courses and avoid having volunteers and organisation in place very late, with excessive delays.

What are the time limits for the UTMB®?

The time limits for the UTMB® are calculated as precisely as possible and according to the time limit for each event. The time limits are the departure times from the main checkpoints and are defined for each edition in the Runner's Guide and on the website. They are calculated to enable participants to reach the finish within the time limit, while allowing for any stops (rest, meal, etc.). To be authorised to continue the race, competitors must leave the checkpoint before the set time limit, regardless of the time at which they arrived at the checkpoint.
