How to protect yourself from the rain when hiking?
Bad weather is common when hiking, especially in the mountains. Before setting out on the trails, it is advisable to check the weather forecast, but also to find out about the environment you are going to cross. You may cross small streams, use handrails or walk next to crevasses. In order not to put yourself in danger, you need to be well equipped. Find out below how to protect yourself from the rain when hiking.

Choosing rain protection for the upper body
The rain jacket
The rain jacket is the most important piece of equipment to have when hiking in unstable weather. It is your third layer and its purpose is to protect you from the elements. We advise you to look for a hardshell jacket. It is equipped with a highly waterproof membrane, has good breathability and a significant windproof effect. The possibility of adjusting the hood (with two tightening points at the collar and one at the back) is also a plus. Finally, the pre-shaped visor provides additional protection. Another option is the rain k-way, which is both light and effective against showers.
If you're planning to hike for several days, take a waterproof jacket with you. It can protect you from the weather. Don't just take a waterproof jacket that won't stand up to the weather.
The rain cape
The rain cape or poncho is an alternative to the rain jacket when hiking. It has several advantages, starting with its waterproofness and impermeability. In addition, it protects both your body and your backpack. Finally, it is compact and light, so you can take it everywhere.
On the downside, the rain cape can quickly become cumbersome when wet. It is also not recommended in windy conditions, as the rain can blow over the sides. It also reduces the visibility of your feet and you can get caught on anything.
If you choose a rain cape, you should ensure that it offers a good compromise between waterproofing and breathability.
Choosing rain protection for the lower body
The trousers
If you expect to face a lot of rain during your hike, it is best to buy trousers with a waterproof and breathable membrane. This way you won't have to worry about getting wet. Alternatively, you can use lightweight hiking trousers and a waterproof overtrouser that can be put on quickly and protects you well in the event of rain. A rain jacket combined with waterproof trousers provides optimum protection from the rain.
Gaiters
Another element that can be indispensable when hiking in the rain: gaiters. Their function is to protect your lower legs and feet so that water does not seep into your shoes. Combining a rain cape with gaiters can be a very good idea to protect your non-waterproof hiking gear from the rain.
Footwear
Last but not least, waterproof hiking boots are important if you are hiking in unstable weather. If they are not rainproof, your feet will get wet in your shoes and blisters will quickly appear. In addition, you will feel discomfort when walking. It is important to choose shoes with a Gore-Tex® membrane or similar to ensure that you don't get wet. Choose mid-upper or high shoes if you want to be well protected from the rain.
Protecting your rucksack from rain when hiking
Protecting the outside of the rucksack
To protect the outside of your rucksack, you can either rely on your poncho, which often covers the rucksack as well as your body, or you can use a raincover. This protective cover is often supplied with the hiking backpack or can be purchased separately. It is usually stored in a dedicated part of the rucksack so that it can be quickly removed in case of rain.
Protecting the inside of your backpack
If you want to make sure that your clothes and belongings don't get wet while hiking or trekking, you can also protect the inside of your backpack. Dedicated waterproof bags have been designed for this purpose: they have a good compromise between weight and strength and have a suitable closure. For small items or food, you can also use freezer bags, which are waterproof and leakproof, although not as strong as the dedicated bags. Finally, there are also large waterproof bags that act as a lining for the backpack.
In case of rain, there are many options to protect yourself and your belongings. The choice of certain products over others depends on your wishes, the type of hiking you do and the environment you will encounter.
