Storing your trail and hiking poles

When trail running or hiking, it is necessary to be able to store your poles to avoid them becoming too bulky. Let's take a look at three different storage solutions.

When hiking, on long outings, but especially when trail running, on gentle slopes or flat terrain, it is important that you can quickly store your poles to avoid unnecessary clutter that could slow you down. This is why we advise you to choose adjustable multi-strand poles:

  • telescopic or foldable when hiking
  • exclusively foldable when trail riding, for lightness, minimum bulk and ease of deployment/storage.

In this post, we will briefly introduce three different equipment solutions available to you, so that you can free yourself from your poles and store them easily when you don't need them.

1. The rucksack - the trail bag - the waistcoat

The place for the poles depends on the type of hiking backpack, trail bag or waistcoat. It can be in the front or back, in a pocket or between two straps/elastic bands.

2. The quiver

The quiver is a sort of archery-style quiver that can be attached to your trail waistcoat or backpack and into which you can put your folding poles.

3. The belt

This is perhaps the most popular solution for trail runners in recent years. There are belts that have elastic bands at the back between which you can slide your poles horizontally down your back. This is a practical and quick technique, which allows the weight of the poles (although ultra-light) to be distributed perfectly. However, this system is only compatible with poles that are ultra compact when folded. Make sure that the poles do not protrude beyond your hips, or you could hit them with your arms as you move forward, which could hurt you or at least be quite uncomfortable.
