Spare shoes for the UTMB

When choosing your shoes for the UTMB® you will also need to consider the issue of replacement shoes. This question covers several aspects which we will detail for you in order to guide you in your decisions.

A spare pair of shoes for the race

It is not inconceivable to have a spare pair of shoes for your main pair of running shoes. You are not immune to accidents or problems with your shoes. Without reliable shoes, there is no UTMB®! So plan to buy 2 pairs of identical shoes and alternate the pairs during your preparation so that you don't have a brand new pair on the day of the event. Running in a new pair of shoes is not recommended and your foot will not be used to them. This second pair can accompany you to the start area and you can even choose to put them in your running bag for safety. It is very unlikely that you will need them but it is not impossible and it would be a shame to have to give up after 30 kilometres of running for example, because one of your shoes has encountered a problem or a sharp stone!

A pair of shoes for the period before the start

Many competitors do not like to put on their trail shoes long before the start. This is understandable and it is also part of the runner's ritual in the tension that precedes an important event. It's a good idea to have a pair of shoes for your warm-up or for the whole waiting period before the start. Leave this pair of shoes with a friend or in your bag at the start.

A pair of shoes for after the race

It's a relief to take off your trail shoes (even if they are comfortable) after hours of running and dozens of kilometres. Some people love to put on simple sandals or old, comfortable running shoes. Whatever the case, make sure you have a pair of shoes that you are comfortable in, for stretching, relaxing or participating in awards ceremonies or simply having a meal with friends after the finish.
