What do I need to know before buying a hiking T-Shirt?

A t-shirt is just a t-shirt, right? Well no! These days purpose-built hiking t-shirts employ innovative construction and technologies to deliver truly superior performance for demanding conditions. With a variety of fabrics and the ability to stretch and recover as your body moves, hiking t-shirts are comfortable and versatile, supporting dynamic activity, keeping you dry and regulating your temperature.

Technical, ultralight t-shirts are a popular choice for long distance hiking, fastpacking and trail running. With mesh type construction they are durable and ensure optimal breathability and moisture management, often with anti-bacterial and anti-odour treatments to keep them fresh when your work rate rises.

Many of these ultralight hiking t-shirts still offer a fair degree of UV protection, and there are eco-friendly options that use a high proportion (some 100%) of recycled fibres. They pack away to almost nothing and may even offer a small stash pocket – handy!

Heavier duty t-shirts boast many of the same features, though with greater absorbency, very fast drying times, more durability and increased protection from harmful sun. These really do show that high performance and reduced environmental impact can go hand-in-hand.

Hiking t-shirts manufactured with synthetic fibres produced under environmentally responsible conditions certainly offer great features and performance – but don’t rule out the natural alternatives. High quality merino wool t-shirts have superb thermal regulation properties, keeping you cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cool. Being naturally lightweight, soft and comfortable next to the skin, Merino wicks moisture away effectively and is odour resistant. It’s often blended with other fibres to capitalise on the properties of each, delivering outstanding performance in the field as well as looking great when you’re back home.

And don’t be put off by any preconceptions about being hard to look after – merino hiking t-shirts offer easy care technology, so they can be machine washed without a worry.
